________________________________________________________________________ Dear Fellow German Teachers! The annual North Carolina Deutsches Wochenende for advanced German students will be held from November 11-12th at Camp Caraway in Asheboro. The weekend is sponsored in part by the North Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). This immersion experience has been a tradition since 1980, and we especially encourage new colleagues to participate. The theme for this year’s camp is Bunte Kunst. Among the events planned are an afternoon Schnitzeljagd and Kunstprojekt (pre-session 3–5p.m.), a Talentschuppen, in which individuals or school groups present a special talent such as a song, a dance, or a skit; an Unterhaltungsabend featuring singing, dancing, and games; a Spiel des Wissens, during which students rotate through a series of play stations prepared and staffed by the participating group leaders; a Staffellauf and Sportstunde, and the Goethe Pokal, a quiz bowl in which competitors show their knowledge of history, culture, and geography of the German-speaking world. As customary, many prizes will be awarded. The cost of the camp is $50, which includes room, meals, and a T-Shirt. Campers must bring their own towels and sleeping bags or linens. Students and teachers should also bring lots of their favorite snacks and drinks to be shared.
Please email us by Friday, September 30th with your pre-registration information, the number of students (boys/girls) you will bring to the camp. Because there is only space for 60 student participants, we would ask that teachers consider bringing no more than 10 students per school. We may have to ask you to bring slightly fewer students than indicated when you pre-register in order to allow as many schools as possible to participate. We will send you confirmation of your numbers by Monday, October 3 rd. You will receive medical permission and consent forms, maps and additional information once pre-registered. An agenda of the weekend’s events will be forthcoming. Student participants should be in 8th through 12th grade and in German III or higher. Accelerated German II students are also welcome to participate. Payment for participants must be received no later than Friday, October 21st. Please make arrangements to have all monies collected from your students by Friday, October 14th to allow for your payment to be mailed to Charlotte, North Carolina in a timely fashion. Checks should be made out to South Meck High School and sent to Herr Land. Please assist our financial secretary by including German Club/Immersion Weekend on your check. Teachers should bring all necessary permission and consent forms as well as medical forms with them to Camp Caraway. These forms will not be collected, but we expect you to have them in case of an emergency. T-Shirts will be sent out to the screener no later than October 21st in order to ensure that they will be ready in time for our immersion weekend. Therefore, it is necessary to have all T-Shirt orders completed prior to this time. Please do your best to follow the timeline above. It is designed to ensure that the immersion weekend runs smoothly. If you are having trouble meeting these deadlines, kindly let us know via email and we will make adjustments if possible to meet your needs. We look forward to hearing from you! Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Alice Harrill |
