Dear Fellow German Teachers,

The 2003 Vergnügungsfest, the annual North Carolina German Immersion Weekend for advanced German students, will be held on November 7-8th at Camp Caraway in Asheboro.

The camp is sponsored by the North Carolina chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). It is a great tradition going back to 1980, and I encourage especially new colleagues to participate.

The theme for this year’s camp will be 100 Jahre Luftfahrt. Among the events planned are a Talentschuppen, in which individuals or school groups will present a special talent such as a song, a dance, or a skit; an Unterhaltungsabend featuring singing, dancing, and games; a Spiel des Wissens, during which students, arranged in teams, will rotate through a series of play stations prepared and staffed by the participating group leaders; a Schnitzeljagd, a scavenger hunt; and the Goethe Pokal, a quiz bowl game in which competitors will have the chance to display their knowledge of the history, culture, and geography of the German-speaking world. As customary, many prizes will be awarded.

The cost of the camp is $50, which includes room, meals, and a T-shirt. Campers must bring their own towels and sleeping bags or linens. Students should also bring some favorite snacks and drinks to be shared.

Please email me by Wednesday, October 1 with your preregistration information, the number of students (boys/girls) you will bring to the camp. Because there is only space for 50 student participants, I may have to ask you to bring slightly fewer students than indicated in your preregistration information in order to allow as many schools as possible to participate. I will send you confirmation of your numbers by Friday, October 3. You will be receiving medical permission and consent forms, maps and additional information once preregistered.

Payment for participants will be due no later than Wednesday, October 15. Checks should be made out to RJ Reynolds German Club and sent to Brigitte Woloszyn, 301 N. Hawthorne, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Beth Gulewich
