Workshop

"Breaking the Sound Barrier: Strategies and Materials for Getting Students to Speak More in Class"
Presenter: Jo Sanders (Village Charter School, Anchorage, AK, Professional Consultant from AATG, Past President of National AATG)

Why do our students sign up for foreign language? It's probably not because they plan to write the next great Faust or in order to be able to read Crime and Punishment in the original. Students take languages because they want to be able to speak them. They want to be able to converse comfortably on a wide range of subjects with students their own age, and to a lesser degree, also with adults. This presentation will give you lots of ideas about how to give up the floor as teacher and allow the students to use the language in all phases of classroom work.

   Lodging

The NCAATG chapter meeting falls on a particularly busy weekend for Duke and UNC. Parent’s Weekend and an NCAA pre-season event will certainly fill areas hotels up quickly. Conference organizers have nevertheless secured a block of single and double hotel rooms at the following hotel in Durham. Given the difficult parking situation at Duke on this Friday evening, this hotel is especially ideal as it has a shuttle to and from Duke’s West Campus, where the Friday evening meetings will take place.

Homestead Studio Suites
1920 Ivy Creek Blvd.
Durham, NC 27707
Phone: 919-402-1700
Reservation: 1-800-804-3724

The sales director, Renee Bergner, has put a reference in their booking system that members of NCAATG can call to book a room with them could have a room for $59.00 per night (ONLY IF THEY ASK FOR DUKE RATES and mention the NCAATG meeting).

The deadline for reserving a room is October 17, 2006.

A note on the shuttle service: The hotel shuttle operates every 15 minutes to and from Duke. Conference organizers are arranging in addition to this special departure times.

   Event Locations and Parking

Events on Friday evening will take place on the second floor of the beautiful new wing of the Duke Divinity School on Duke’s West Campus (next to Duke Chapel). See a map here. It is highly recommended that out-of-town participants staying overnight take advantage of the Homestead Studio Suites’ shuttle service to and from Duke. For those driving in from elsewhere, parking will be available in the Bryan Center Visitor Parking Deck for a fee of $5:00.

All Saturday sessions will take place in Toy Lounge on the fourth floor of Dey Hall on the UNC campus. Parking spaces will be reserved but are available only on a first come first serve basis. Given the potentially busy nature of this weekend at UNC, meeting participants may be required to park in municipal lots off of Rosemary Street and Franklin Street.
