Second Annual German Day
January 8, 2002 Dear Colleagues: Many of you have been wondering about this year's German Day. Let me first affirm that German Day WILL take place, although not on the UNCG campus. UNCG is renovating its student union, and we no longer have this large meeting space available. Fortunately, David Limburg at Guilford College has been kind enough to offer his campus for the second annual German Day. The event will take place on the campus of Guilford College (Greensboro) on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 from 9:30am- 2:00pm. Let me remind those of you who were not part of last year's event, that German Day is an exciting opportunity for teachers and students to showcase their achievements of the current academic year. Students have the opportunity to utilize their language skills in a variety of fun activities and contests at various language levels. Activities include a spelling bee (level I and II); a verb bee (level II and III); a poetry/declamation contest (three levels); song contest (all levels); a skits contest (2 levels), a poster contest (all levels); and a T-shirt contest (all levels). The day will culminate with the "Einstein Bowle," a playful way for your students to show off their knowledge of German trivia. All contests will carry prizes for the best performance. This year we begin a new activity: a skit contest. Each skit must be 5 minutes in length or less. The contest consists of two levels, original skits (written and acted by students) and "literary" skits (students take scenes of plays and act them out). The language of the skits is German. Students will be evaluated on their pronunciation and acting skill for the literary skits, and on their pronunciation, acting skills, and creativity for the original skits. The day will culminate with the "Einstein Bowle," a playful way for your students to show off their knowledge of German trivia. Please note that each teacher is asked to contribute 25 questions to the "Einstein Bowle." Categories are History, Culture, Famous People, Geography, and "Wildcard." Please send your questions to Wendy Pfeiffer-Quaile (730-H Walnut Forrest Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103) or electronically (pfeiffer_quaile@hotmail.com) who will edit out repeat questions, and organize/collate the questions into categories and difficulty level. The deadline for submission is February 8, 2002. Each school may participate in all eight activities. Yet, owing to time constraints, we must limit the number of participants in the various activities. Teachers are invited to select two students per class for the spelling bee, and the verb bee, and one team per class for the song contest. Select one poster and one t-shirt design per class for submission. The poetry contest specifies two students per school per category, and the skit contest can accommodate two skits per school. The "Einstein Bowle" can accommodate two teams per school. Please specify on your application form your students' activity of choice in case we need to limit student participation due to time constraints and activity overlap. You are again invited to bring all of your students to campus to help cheer on their class mates. The rules and regulations of the various contests may be found on the web at http://nc.aatg.org/archive/germdayrules01.html. If you have problems downloading the documents, please contact me and I'd be happy to send you a copy by post. Please note the early deadlines for submission for the T-shirt contest (February 8, 2002). The selection committee will review all entries and decide on a design on February 9, 2002. Late submissions cannot be considered. Please send your submissions to Karin Baumgartner, 1203 Leclair Str., Chapel Hill, NC 27514, or bring it to the NC/AATG spring meeting on February 9, 2002. T-shirts bearing the chosen logo will be for sale at German Day for $ 7.00 per T-shirt. Please pre-order T-Shirts by March 1, 2002 (mail, e-mail, or fax to: Karin Baumgartner, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, PO. Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402, fax # 336-334-5885). Lunch for students will be scheduled between 12:00-12:30. Students may bring their own lunch, and eat in one of the lounges, or weather permitting outside, or they may buy lunch at the Guilford College student cafeteria. Please remember the faculty luncheon organized by Guilford College. The lunch will be informal allowing teachers to drop in and out as need arises. Lunch starts at 11:30 and ends around 1:00. Last year we had a wonderful time meeting all of you, and many of you enjoyed meeting familiar and new colleagues. The registration deadline for German Day is March 1, 2002. Later registration may be accepted if space is available. At the time of registration, student registration fees are due ($ 2.00 per student). For your convenience, a registration form has been attached below. After your registration has been received, you will be sent a confirmation, a map of the Guilford College campus with directions, parking instructions if needed, and a schedule of the various events. Please feel free to contact the German Day coordinator, Karin Baumgartner, at baumgartner@uncg.edu or 336-256-1158 for more information, or consult the NC/AATG web site for updates (http://www.uncg.edu/~pjpynes/ncaatg.htm). Sincerely, |
