Dear Fellow German Teachers,

The Deutsches Wochenende 2010, the annual North Carolina Immersion Weekend, is scheduled for Nov. 12-13 at Camp Caraway in Asheboro. As previously announced, this year will mark the 30th Anniversary, so the theme this year is “Dreißig Jahre, eine Feier.”

This immersion camp is sponsored in part by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). It is geared for advanced German students (level III and above), but highly motivated German II students are welcome if space allows.

Events planned include a Kennenlernenspiel; art projects and skits featuring German holidays, festivals, and birthdays of famous German-speakers; singing; dancing; games; a Spiel des Wissens, during which students, arranged in teams, will rotate through a series of play stations prepared and staffed by teachers; a Staffellauf (a relay race); a Fotoschnitzeljagd (photo scavenger hunt); a Pyramidenspiel (vocabulary game); and the Goethe Bowl, a quiz bowl in which competitors will have a chance to display their knowledge of the history, culture, and geography of the German-speaking world.

The cost of the camp will be $55 per student, which includes meals (2 dinners and a breakfast), lodging, and commemorative T-shirts. Campers must bring their own towels and sleeping bags or linens. Students and teachers should also bring lots of their favorite snacks and drinks to be shared. Teachers should bring digital cameras (along with any cables or adapters for connecting them to the laptop with which we will make a slide show). We will send a complete list of suggested items to bring at a later date.

Please e-mail us by Thursday, Oct. 7, the following pre-registration information:

 * The number of boys
 * The number of girls

who are interested in attending and will attend if invited. Because space is limited to 60 students, we may have to ask you to bring slightly fewer students than indicated by your pre-registration so that as many schools as possible can be represented and participate. See our letter for parents which may assist you in recruiting.

We will send you confirmation of your numbers by Monday, Oct. 11. In that mailing you will receive medical permission and consent forms, an invoice, maps, and additional information.

Payment will be due by Friday, Oct. 22. Check with invoice will be sent to Tom Skinner at Charlotte Catholic, 7702 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.  Checks should be made out to “Charlotte Catholic High School,” and the memo section should say “German Club”. Please understand that there will be no refunds possible.

Please let us know what questions you have. Danke im voraus! Wir freuen uns sehr auf das 30. Jubiläum!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
